A lighfoot hafling can hide when behind another medium or larger creature. That is the only character rule for that allows hiding behind another. So hiding in the crowd is not allowed RAW. Personally I would not house rule for this either as hiding in a real crowd is going to show up as people look at you acting weird.
WebHiding is something that any character can do, but rogues can do it as a bonus action. A character finds a spot to hide and then makes a stealth check. If the stealth check is higher than the enemy's passive perception (on the monster stats sheet), they're hidden. The bonus of being hidden means that the next attack gains advantage.
